Women Performing Resistance

South American Voices at King’s College London
A groundbreaking collaborative event bringing together seven female artists from Chile, Argentina, and Brazil who practice traditionally male-dominated art forms: cantoras (women music poets) and capoeiristas (practitioners of Afro-Brazilian martial arts). Organized by Dr. MarĂa Batlle and Georgina Robinson as part of their research projects, this two-day gathering featured workshops, performances, and discussions that highlighted these women’s artistic resistance against marginalization. The event created a unique multilingual space where these artists could share their knowledge and experiences within an academic setting, while building meaningful connections across cultures. Participants from various universities, artistic communities, and South American diasporas engaged in this celebration of female artistic leadership, creating valuable cross-cultural dialogues that inspired both artists and attendees alike.
